Now even Barack Obama has said that for years the government has been seeing flying objects that “we can’t explain”. A society’s reaction to things it can’t explain always tell us more about the society than about the thing itself. But, like American society, science fiction has been changing in ways which show how stifling and artificial such moments can be. Indeed, most of society seems ready to view UFOs as primarily a security threat to which a response by the military is required. The narrow matter of whether UFOs represent a national security risk is worth investigating, but it hardly exhausts what we need to know.
